Happy New Year! Songwriting Our Stories at Walker Art Center
Kashimana Ahua ran three songwriting half hour workshops at the Walker Art Center in the first weekend of 2020 and here is what Kashimana had to say about the experience.
“It was a lovely day and I was very excited to see how many of the families would make it to the workshops at 11:30am, 12:30pm and 1:30pm. I am happy to say we had a pretty good showing and was excited to see some familiar faces over the course of the day. Most of the attendants were first time songwriters and with only half an hour to write a song we managed to get through a chorus and a verse for all the sessions.
We wrote about a Family of Firefighting Unicorns, we wrote a love song to the planet and we also wrote a song about Highway 55. We used the looper to lay down some beats and we added melodies to all the lyrics. We even jammed for a little bit. It was a very busy day and a very cool outcome.”
We usually recommend at least an hour to get the most out of our workshops but the goal of this day was to give people as many tools as possible to tell their stories and just start writing with one another. Also it was an inter-generational activity including toddlers and up. You got to keep it moving for the little ones.
